For as long as I can remember, I have always had a fascination with duality. Ideas of contrast throughout life are an important part of my practice. Whether it’s humanity's relationship with the rest of the world, light in darkness, or life and death. I enjoy conveying these concepts through the exploration of different mediums, ideas, and processes. Much of my work relates to the importance of climate change. Duality is present within this theme, as our humanity is rooted in nature. Art can help us connect the dots between these concepts and remind us to live a balanced life.
When creating my art, I enjoy using graphite and ink to create stylized illustrations. I also enjoy painting with oil and experimenting with more unique mediums. I prefer to create smaller works with lots of detail and line expression. My process consists of using graphite to structure the work. This is followed by inking and crosshatching to add a solid sense of form. I also enjoy painting landscapes to convey climate change, as mentioned above. Using varied paint strokes and texture can allow these environments to come to life.
While growing my practice, I have used many new techniques and mediums. For example, using scratchboard I created a dream-like landscape scene by letting my lines and ideas flow seamlessly from one section to the next. There is real depth in the tonal values, and the contrast between light and dark relates to the binaries present in my work. I hope to reach like-minded individuals who appreciate the duality of life as much as I do.
